Initiative Kick-off: Antioch Cruise Night!
Posted October 12, 2016
The Committee to Save the Yard is dedicated to making the Town Square a reality.
This Saturday during the “Antioch Cruise Night” event, we will be collecting signatures for our petition to make the Old Beede Lumber Yard a town square. This event is happening October 15, 2016 from 5PM to 11PM!
Based on a long Antioch tradition, “the cruise” was a time where the people would hop in their freshest, cleanest, cars and show them off by driving around downtown. This tradition is being revived for one night only!
We will be collecting enough signatures to call for a special election so that the citizens of Antioch can decide what the best course of action is for the yard. After many unsuccessful attempts to discuss this with the city, we see this as the only option we have left. The City Council has the power to put this item on the agenda, but consistently refuses to do so!
The Committee to Save the Yard is working to preserve our historic downtown waterfront by building a privately funded public park and event center. The City Council has started negotiations to build high-density housing in this same lot, against the wishes of this city's citizens. In an independently run assessment of downtown, consultants found that downtown housing would pose numerous problems.
Consultants and Economic experts have long advised that public open spaces are key to revitalizing Antioch's downtown. This park and event center will serve as the cultural and social hub of downtown, jumpstarting the economic development of the entire downtown area.
If you want to see this become a reality, consider volunteering! We are seeking motivated individuals to help gather signatures at various events in Antioch! No experience necessary and we will train you! Please contact, Antonio Hernandez. Phone: 925 437-2058 Email:
